Story Line: Carola Oman’s Nelson is a highly detailed, chronological biography that reads with the sweeping narrative arc of an epic historical novel. Rather than just focusing on military strategy, Oman pulls heavily from Nelson’s personal letters and diaries to reconstruct his entire life from childhood to his death. Oman’s primary goal with this storyline was to “clean the gilt and varnish of legend” away from Nelson, presenting him not as a flawless statue, but as a vain, deeply human, and fiercely passionate individual who achieved extraordinary things.
